Drivers to face £100 fine under new parking law changes in weeks

Drivers in Scotland are being alerted about impending changes to parking laws that could result in high fines and be implemented before the end of the month.

In December of last year, nationwide legislation was enacted throughout Scotland, giving councils the authority to police improper parking.

This covers parking on sidewalks, on verges that separate roadways from pavements, at crossing locations and by double parking.

The new regulations went into effect on December 11, 2023, and to inform drivers of the changes in the law, a nationwide parking campaign was started.

The Scottish capital’s drivers are being forewarned once again as Edinburgh Council will start enforcing these regulations on Monday, January 29.

Following requests from charities and organisations dedicated to traffic safety in recent years, the pavement parking regulations were implemented.

Double parking or leaving a car on the pavement might make it unsafe for people to go through their area and down the streets.

Families with young children and those with disabilities may find it especially dangerous.

Parking attendants will have the authority to issue penalty fee notices to vehicles that are double parked, parked on pavements, or parked on certain verges at crossing locations.

The parking ticket will be issued at the national level of £100, although this will be reduced to £50 if it is paid within the first 14 days.

It will follow a similar process to existing parking tickets currently issued across the Scottish capital.
