Storm Pia: Travel cancellations for Christmas rail travel as 115mph winds batter UK

Due to the havoc Storm Pia, trains, and airports tonight, tens of thousands of travellers will have their Christmas travel plans severely disrupted.

Heavy winds caused trees to fall into vital overhead lines, trapping hundreds of merry travellers outside Euston and Kings Cross trains.

On the main East Coast and West Coast routes, travel from London to Scotland and the North was delayed by several hours.

After numerous trains were cancelled or experienced major delays, LNER and Avanti announced that delays will likely last well into tonight.

In another instance, at least 25 services were cancelled until 7 p.m. due to a last-minute strike by French employees on the Eurostar.

The vehicle-only Le Shuttle service was also enduring heavy delays between Folkestone and Calais due to the strikes.

At 7:00 p.m., Eurostar announced that the strike had ended and that services will gradually resume.

The Met Office reports that Storm Pia is progressively making her way towards continental Europe, and that conditions should clear up tonight.

Although snow is expected in the far north and rain is predicted into the weekend, the strong winds that have pounded Britain are predicted to subside tonight.
