Brits urged to prepare for 7-inch rain, travel chaos and power cuts this weekend

The Met Office has issued a rare amber-level warning as seven inches of rain might pose a “danger to life” in the United Kingdom this weekend.

Deep and fast-flowing floods, travel disruption, and power outages are all possible in the afflicted area, according to the National Weather agency.

It will go into effect at 3 a.m. on Saturday (October 7) and will remain until 6 a.m. on Sunday (October 8), encompassing a vast portion of central and northern Scotland.

Glasgow, Stirling, and Perth have all been affected.

A yellow-level warning was already in place for much of Scotland, but now the Met Office expects more severe conditions in this specified area.

The warning states that 100mm (4in) of rainfall can be expected for most, and that the wettest spots could see as much as 180mm (7in).

The rain is expected to start tonight (Friday, October 6), growing more severe on Saturday before easing on Sunday.

People in the impacted area have been told to expect: “Homes and businesses flooded and damage to some buildings. Danger to life from fast flowing or deep floodwater. Delays or cancellations to train and bus services.”

“Spray and flooding leading to difficult driving conditions and some road closures. Some communities cut off by flooded roads. Power cuts and loss of other services to some homes and businesses.”

According to the Met Office website, amber-level warnings are only issued when “there is an increased likelihood of impacts from severe weather”.

“You should think about changing your plans and taking action to protect yourself and your property,” the national weather agency says.
