Regrets? Brexit voters have lost confidence in leaving EU due to economic breakdown, claims Sir John Curtice

A polling expert appeared on ITV’s Robert Peston’s weekly political analysis show to discuss the trend of Leave voters abandoning Brexit.

The current state of the economy, according to Sir John Curtice, a politics professor at the University of Strathclyde, was a major factor in this change.

He even admitted that a second referendum was a possibility, despite the fact that neither Rishi Sunak nor Sir Keir Starmer have mentioned it in their manifestos.

“Among Leave voters, who you would normally expect to say that Brexit was right, they have become much less confident in the economic benefits of Brexit,” Sir John said on Wednesday evening.

“As a result, fewer Leave voters appear to be saying they would vote to remain in the EU.

“The problem with Brexit is that, given the state of the British economy, convincing people that Brexit is a success is extremely difficult.”

When asked if this would lead to another referendum, he said, “It’s not inconceivable, but at the moment, at least in England, there isn’t any party that is even close to that position.”
