Verhofstadt slammed by Brexiteer for fantasising about ‘United States of Europe’

An influential Brexiteer has reacted angrily to the hardline federalist who fantasises about a United States of Europe.

Guy Verhofstadt was today slammed by a Brexiteer after claiming that making a success of the UK’s departure from the EU is a “delusion”. The Belgian MEP took to Twitter after it was revealed that a secret summit was held to address Brexit’s flaws.

“British politicians are far behind public opinion; making Brexit work is a delusion,” said Mr Verhofstadt, who was the European Parliament’s Brexit boss during the tortuous UK-EU negotiations.

“Time for pro-Europeans to put a roadmap for a different relationship on the table!

But Tory MP Mark Francois, who is chairman of the powerful European Research Group, suggested that the former prime minister of Belgium is “pretty delusional”.

Mr Francois referred to the EU propagandist’s recent sensational claim that Brexit was to blame for Vladimir Putin’s brutal invasion of Ukraine.

“Just the other week, Guy Verhofstadt tried to blame Brexit for the invasion of Ukraine – that sounds pretty delusory to me!” he said.

Mr Verhofstad’s remarks come in response to reports of a cross-party conference last week on “making Brexit work better”.
