Queen Consort to wear Queen Mary’s Crown at coronation

Camilla, the Queen Consort, will wear Queen Mary’s Crown at King Charles’ coronation.

The crown has been removed from display at the Tower of London in preparation for the May ceremony.

This is the first time in nearly three centuries that an existing crown will be used to coronate a consort rather than a new commission.

In the interests of sustainability and efficiency, Her Majesty is said to have decided to relocate the Crown of Queen Mary.

The crown was commissioned for Mary of Teck’s coronation as Queen Consort at the coronation of King George V, the current monarch’s great-grandfather, in 1911.

The Crown Jeweller will make some minor changes and additions in keeping with the tradition of jewels being inserted uniquely for the occasion and to reflect the wearer’s individual style.

These modifications will honour Queen Elizabeth II by resetting the Crown with the Cullinan III, IV, and V diamonds, which the previous monarch frequently wore as brooches.
