Warning to New Year’s Eve travellers as nationwide transportation chaos erupts

Travelling today is advised for New Year’s Eve revellers, or else they run into the risk of missing their festivities.

Customers who have rail tickets for December 31 can use them starting today, according to Rail Network Northern, which operates at more than 450 stations nationwide.

However, they advise anyone planning to use the service the day after to “expect disruption.”

Due to the unavailability of train workers, they claim to be operating a curtailed service throughout the North West, with some services ending earlier than normal and others not operating at all.

Cross Country, which makes stops at 120 stations around England and Scotland, has alerted passengers of the possibility of “last-minute cancellations” due to their “extremely busy” schedule on New Year’s Eve.

Additionally, they stated that passengers should plan ahead for their trip because their services may end earlier than usual and their schedules may vary without warning.

Meanwhile, a person was struck by a train near Slough, leading to the cancellation of all Great Western Railway services at London Paddington this morning. This also meant that there was no service on the Elizabeth line between Hayes and Harlington and Reading.

LNER said there would be no trains between Edinburgh and Aberdeen or Inverness for the rest of today due to the conditions, with customers told to delay travelling until tomorrow. ScotRail also had no trains on the Aberdeen route due to a landslip.

Trains from Glasgow Central to Carlisle via Dumfries were being axed at Kilmarnock, and trains between Glasgow Central, Oban, and Mallaig were cancelled.

A ‘precarious tree’ near Box Hill & Westhumble station affected South Western Railway services between Leatherhead and Dorking, resulting in several lines being shut.

Other Thameslink routes, which also created havoc for customers yesterday, were also impacted today between Bedford and Brighton, St Albans and London Blackfriars, and Luton and Rainham.

Meanwhile, due to a tree blocking the railway outside of Uttoxeter, East Midlands Railway issued a warning about potential disruptions between Derby and Stoke-on-Trent.

CrossCountry also said that fewer trains were able to run between Birmingham New Street and Nottingham due to a shortage of train drivers.

Greater Anglia journeys between London Liverpool Street and Norwich, Ipswich and Colchester were being disrupted through the Chelmsford area until January 1 inclusive.

Furthermore, heavy winds in the Channel caused delays for sailings between Dover and France, according to ferry operator DFDS.

According to the operator, passengers who have reserved tickets in advance for travel between Preston and Glasgow or Edinburgh can board trains today or tomorrow.

Yesterday, 18 flights from Heathrow Airport to Barcelona, Berlin, Madrid, and Paris as well as return routes from Aberdeen, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Jersey, and Manchester were cancelled owing to air traffic control limitations.
