Sunak plans £2M investment in AI classroom tools to reduce teacher workloads

As he prepares for this week’s AI Safety Summit, Rishi Sunak will try to persuade voters that artificial intelligence will help “save the NHS” and restructure public services.

The Prime Minister is set to make a series of announcements regarding the incorporation of AI into the public sector, beginning with employing the technology to assist teachers in lesson planning.

On Sunday, the Science Secretary emphasized that it could be “deployed across the board in a range of all different public services” such as the migration system, the military, and others.

However, Labour accused the Government of failing to outline a strategy for making the UK a world leader in technology and warned of the risk of patients’ medical data being sold for profit.

On Wednesday and Thursday, Mr Sunak will hold a meeting of world leaders and IT executives at Bletchley Park in Buckinghamshire, with the goal of establishing a global regulatory framework for AI by the summer.

He is attempting to debunk allegations that the topic is unrelated to voters’ concerns by highlighting how AI can revolutionize everyday life. “This is the thing that could save the NHS,” according to a No. 10 source.

The AI life sciences accelerator mission is one of several initiatives aimed at capitalising on the UK’s capabilities in life sciences across academia, medical research, industry, and the NHS.

The £100 million is intended to help jumpstart this study and investigate methods to combat lethal or life-changing disorders such as cancer and dementia.

On Monday, the government will announce a £2 million investment to assist the online schooling network Oak National Academy in developing new AI-powered teaching tools that will allow all teachers to use technology to build tailored lesson plans. The tools will eventually be free to use.

The Prime Minister said: “AI has extraordinary potential to reform our education system for the better, with considerable value for both teachers and students. Oak National Academy’s work to harness AI to free up the workload for teachers is a perfect example of the revolutionary benefits this technology can bring.”
