Drivers to pay up to £160 in new parking and traffic fines

London Councils has launched a consultation to determine if parking and traffic fines will be raised.

The consultation asked if the maximum price of parking charges should be raised from £130 to £160.

Transport for London raised the parking, bus lane, and moving traffic penalty fines on the roadways from £130 to £160 in 2022.

Since 2010, the Transport and Environment Committee has not assessed any of the penalty charges.

Many of the current fines and levies have not changed since 2007, with the Committee in responsibility of parking, bus lane, and moving traffic penalty costs on borough roads.

“London boroughs are committed to making our roads safe and accessible for everyone,” said Mayor Philip Glanville, Executive Member for Climate Change, Transport, and Environment for the London Councils.

“By managing parking and traffic effectively, we can incentivize people to drive and park safely, protect access, crossings, and junctions, and increase active travel such as walking, cycling, and rented e-scooter use.”

“We can also improve bus priority, lower carbon emissions, and improve air quality.”

The number of penalty charge notices (PCNs) issued in London has increased by 50 percent over the last 12 years.

London boroughs are concerned that the current penalty charge levels are “not high enough” to encourage compliance and act as a deterrent.
