Council tax to soar by as much as £120 a year, Treasury proposes

Council tax might rise by up to £120 per year.

According to new Treasury proposals, local governments may be permitted to raise taxes by up to 5% next year, reported by The Telegraph.

From April, average family homeowners in Band D could face a council tax bill of more than £2,000 per year.

Rutland Council charges Band D households the highest rate in the country, £2,365.56.

If they increased their bills by 5%, the total would be £2,486.21, a more than £120 increase.

Other locations will see a £100 or £110 hike in their prices.

Inflation is expected to fall but currently stands at 4.6%, meaning the rises are likely to exceed inflation.

Local authorities will not decide until the new year by how much they will increase council tax.
