The days leading up to Christmas are predicted to be filled with rain and winds exceeding 80 mph, rather than pleasant weather.

A yellow weather warning has been issued for the majority of the UK for tomorrow as people prepare for strong winds. It appears like the areas north of Birmingham will be hardest hit by the impending storm.

Authorities in the Shetland Islands are so worried that they have decided to close all schools tomorrow out of caution.

Ferries that usually bring vital supplies over from the mainland may be interrupted as well.

Similarly, Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) Distribution have also announced that they are bringing in extra teams to deal with any damage to the power network that Storm Pia may cause.

The storm is set to hit the UK overnight, with the weather warning beginning at midnight, and running across Thursday to 9pm. That means tonight is the last chance Brits have before the strong winds batter their homes and schools alike.

Storm Pia is being caused by an area of “notably deep” low pressure sweeping to the north of the UK from the Norwegian Sea.

It’s moving across the waters tonight and settling into place tomorrow. Much of the worst of the wind will hit the north east of England, curving inland towards the likes of Leeds.

Met Office Chief Meteorologist, Paul Gundersen, said: “From late Wednesday into Thursday, strong winds are likely to develop across a large area of the UK. We’ve issued a large yellow warning area where there’s a potential for some impacts, but gusts of 50-60mph are possible for large parts of central and northern areas of the UK.
