{"id":4922,"date":"2023-09-20T08:11:21","date_gmt":"2023-09-20T08:11:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/savebritain.org\/?p=4922"},"modified":"2023-09-20T08:11:24","modified_gmt":"2023-09-20T08:11:24","slug":"birmingham-to-unveil-16-foot-statue-of-a-woman-wearing-the-islamic-hijab","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/savebritain.org\/birmingham-to-unveil-16-foot-statue-of-a-woman-wearing-the-islamic-hijab\/","title":{"rendered":"Birmingham to unveil 16-foot statue of a woman wearing the Islamic Hijab"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A 16-foot statue of a woman wearing the Islamic hijab headdress will be unveiled next month in a suburb of the multicultural city of Birmingham, in what is believed to be a first in the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The sculpture designed by leftist artist Luke Perry, dubbed the \u2018Strength of the Hijab\u2019, will be erected in the English town of Smethwick in October and will stand 16 feet (five metres) and weigh approximately one tonne. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to a\u00a0report\u00a0from the BBC, the Birmingham suburb statue is thought to be the first of its kind, with even Islamic countries not celebrating the hijab in such a manner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Hijab statue to be installed in UK city of Birmingham <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/u7qJRayjj9\">pic.twitter.com\/u7qJRayjj9<\/a><\/p>&mdash; The National (@TheNationalNews) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TheNationalNews\/status\/1703900656304566587?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">September 18, 2023<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr Perry said:&nbsp;\u201cThe Strength of the Hijab is a piece which represents women who wear hijabs of the Islamic faith, and it\u2019s really there because it\u2019s such an underrepresented part of our community, but such an important one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThey need visibility, it\u2019s so important, so working with the community to come up with the designs has been really exciting because we didn\u2019t know what it was going to look like until now.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The leftist sculptor previously worked on the \u2018Black British History is British History\u2019 sculpture, which was unveiled in Winson Green earlier this year.
