The 71-year-old Irish musician said it was “clever” to deface the 1888 painting while it was hidden behind a glass screen because people would only see it as annoying, and “annoying is quite good.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Two women from the Just Stop Oil movement have been charged in connection with the incident at the National Gallery earlier this month, which occurred amid larger Extinction Rebellion protests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Geldof, a long-standing climate and humanitarian campaigner, said: \u201cThe climate activists are 1,000% right! And 1,000% I support them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIt\u2019s offensive to destroy Van Gogh\u2019s genius. That achieves nothing. But it was clever to throw it on the glass knowing it wouldn\u2019t be destroyed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThat\u2019s just annoying. And annoying is quite good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI was driving to Hyde Park when the Extinction Rebellion people blocked it and I was f****** furious.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cBut I wasn\u2019t railing against them. I was thinking, \u2018If I was 18, would I be there?\u2019 and the answer is yes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cAnnoying people into policy change may not work. Does that mean I\u2019m against their passion? Their anger? Their bravery? No.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWould I put up with it? They\u2019re not killing anyone. Climate change will.\u201d he told Radio Times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
