Despite hopes of a resolution between the UK and the EU, Joe Biden’s ally Nancy Pelosi has once again intervened in a Brexit row. The Speaker of the United States House of Representatives travelled to Ireland to discuss the Northern Ireland Protocol.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She arrived yesterday to meet with US Ambassador Claire Cronin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Democrats used the talks to warn the UK once more against acting unilaterally to resolve a dispute over Brexit customs checks on goods crossing the Irish Sea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
To avoid a border on the island of Ireland, the Protocol in the 2019 EU withdrawal agreement requires checks on most goods travelling to the province from the United Kingdom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Ms Cronin stated that she and Ms Pelosi discussed “the importance of the UK and EU reaching a negotiated solution on the Northern Ireland Protocol.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“A resolution would be a net win for the region’s economy and political stability in the long term – for all its communities,” she added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The newest intervention warns the UK to reach an agreement with Brussels, despite recent hopes that both sides can reach an agreement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Since Mr Biden became President, the US has repeatedly intervened in Brexit, issuing a series of threats to the UK.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It has cautioned that if the Good Friday Agreement is jeopardised, it will not sign a trade agreement with Britain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
However, Prime Minister Liz Truss put a trade agreement with Washington on hold last night in order to prevent it from being used against Britain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“There aren’t currently any negotiations taking place with the US, and I don’t expect those to start in the short to medium term,” she told reporters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Ms Truss is scheduled to meet with President Biden tomorrow on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.<\/p>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
