Von Der Leyen SLAMMED for ‘Congratulations’ Message to New UK PM Liz Truss

Ursula von der Leyen has been chastised for sending a “lukewarm” congratulations message to Liz Truss.

Earlier on Monday, it was announced that Ms Truss, the UK’s chief Brexit negotiator, would become the next leader of the Conservative Party, defeating rival Rishi Sunak.

“Congratulations, @trussliz,” said the President of the European Commission in response to the news.

“The EU and the UK are partners. We face many challenges together, from climate change to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. I look forward to a constructive relationship, in full respect of our agreements.”

Some, however, have criticised Ms von der Leyen’s tone, claiming that the tweet is a “threat” to Ms Truss and that she should follow the Northern Ireland Protocol.

France 24 European Affairs editor, Catherine Nicholson said: “The congrats message from the EU Commission President feels lukewarm to me and “in full respect of our agreements” reads as: “so long as you stick to the Brexit deal”.

“Doesn’t sound like a partner to me, sounds more like a threat “our way or no way,” but then we’re used to that, which is why we voted out of the asylum that is the EU!” tweeted @takeusout_lynda.

Liz Truss announced plans earlier this year to override parts of the Northern Ireland Protocol, which the EU claims violate international law.
