The “obsessed with bashing Britain” US media has sparked outrage for running “monumentally ignorant” content claiming Britain is in decline and the Brexit fantasy is “over.”

For the past years, numerous articles, many with front-page coverage, depict Britain as a plague-ridden, impoverished hellhole in terminal decline.

Sometimes the abuse is so outrageous that the only reasonable response is to laugh.

Recently, the New York Times ran a comment piece by politics and culture commentator Richard Seymour titled “The Fantasy of Brexit Britain Is Over”.

Mr Seymour described Britain after Covid and Boris Johnson resigned as “economically stagnant, socially fragmented, and politically adrift.”

He added, “The right’s Brexit fantasy — of a revitalised Britain, freed from the shackles of Europe and able once again to confidently assert itself at home and abroad — is finished.”

The right was outraged by his article. “Stupid and monumentally ignorant anti-Brexit propaganda from the left-wing New York Times, which is obsessed with bashing Britain,” said Nile Gardiner, a former Margaret Thatcher aide.

Its British coverage has devolved into a farce. Except for a few zealous Remainers, no one takes it seriously.

The New York Times is the official newspaper of the United States. It has long outgrown its confines in New York City. It is now a national publication with a global audience thanks to its thriving digital edition.

As America faces dictatorships on the march from Moscow to Beijing, its most powerful newspaper prefers to rail against Brexit Britain.

In the 1930s, The New York Times won a Pulitzer Prize for its coverage of the Soviet Union. Without a doubt, it can now look forward to another for its Brexit Britain claims.
