Chris Whitty Says Doctors Needed to Fight Air Pollution"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The\u00a0Chief Medical Officer for England, who has led the government\u2019s response to the coronavirus, has warned that air pollution is \u201ceverybody\u2019s problem and it\u2019s a problem at all times.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Speaking at the Clean Air Summit last Thursday, Professor Whitty said that it is a \u201csolvable problem\u201d, saying that society will need to look at areas such as road planning and engineering to come up with ways to reduce pollution, <em>The Times<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.co.uk\/article\/chris-whitty-doctors-could-help-us-avoid-air-pollution-2t5jqqz2k\">reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHowever, that doesn\u2019t deal with the here and now, and many of these problems are going to take some years to work through.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis is where the medical profession does come in. Along with others, I agree with the principle, as do leaders of the medical profession, that we have concentrated too little on air pollution,\u201d Whitty said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The top UK medical scientist said that medical officials should be looking to draw up plans for specific areas to be avoided by \u201cvulnerable\u201d people, explaining: \u201cThis is a time, place, and route you should be trying to avoid.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>London\u2019s leftist Labour Party Mayor, Sadiq Khan struck a more apocalyptic tone, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-england-london-60423340\">saying<\/a>: \u201cWe simply don\u2019t have time to waste.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cDeadly air pollution is permanently damaging the lungs of young Londoners and affecting older people who are more vulnerable to the impacts of poor air quality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis is also about social justice. We know pollution hits the poorest Londoners, who are least likely to own a car, the hardest\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Climate change as a whole has become a major point of focus across the political establishment following the election of Prime Minister Boris Johnson who has been at the forefront of the so-called \u201cBuild Back Better\u201d movement in the wake of the COVID.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Branding himself as the \u201cMoses\u201d of climate change in October of last year, Boris Johnson warned that the supposed dire consequences of allegedly man-made global warming outweigh the impacts of the coronavirus, and therefore should seek to empower scientists further to shape the lives of British citizens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe lesson of COVID is absolutely clear.\u00a0We have to listen to the scientists.
