Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the head of the World Health Organization, demanded that strict anti-coronavirus measures such as masks, mass vaccination programmes, and social restrictions shall be reinstated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
While many governments have almost completely abandoned coronavirus restrictions due to the declining threat, Tedros stressed that the pandemic is \u201cnowhere near over.\u201d He believes that now is not the time for anyone to return to the liberties of the past.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
As he spoke to the media from the World Health Organization’s headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, the 57-year-old former Ethiopian minister of health and foreign affairs urged governments to “deploy tried and tested measures like masking, improved ventilation, and test and treat protocols.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI am concerned that cases of COVID-19 continue to rise \u2013 putting further pressure on stretched health systems and health workers,\u201d Tedros said. \u201cI am also concerned about the increasing trend of deaths.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Some restrictions have already been proposed in the United Kingdom if the increase in cases affects the treatment backlog in hospitals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“New waves of the virus demonstrate once again that the COVID-19 is nowhere near over,” the recently reelected career bureaucrat continued.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cOf course, there\u2019s been a lot of progress. We have safe and effective tools that prevent infections, hospitalisations and deaths. However, we should not take them for granted.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He urged governments to review and adjust their COVID-19 response plans on a regular basis in light of changing circumstances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
