UK to Unveil New Law Banning Gay and Transgender ‘Conversion Therapy’

The UK government is about to announce a new law that will outlaw all forms of so-called conversion therapy.

According to ITV, transgender conversion therapy will be made illegal alongside other forms.

It comes after massive protests erupted when Boris Johnson’s government attempted to quietly repeal the ban, which was promised to the LGBTQ+ community five years ago.

When pressed, the government quickly reversed its position, but ministers refused to protect transgender people from the heinous practise.

A bill to prohibit all efforts to change a person’s sexuality or gender identity is expected to be announced in the coming days.

The level of cross-party support for a total ban, including from Conservatives, is said to have surprised Downing Street.

Rather than Equalities Minister Kemi Badenoch, Number 10 is reportedly in charge of shaping the new law.

The legislation will not be published in its entirety until later this year, though it is understood that Rishi Sunak is eager to complete the bill’s passage before the next election.

However, campaigners have warned that questions about what will and will not be included remain.

It is unclear whether the legislation will include ‘consensual’ loopholes for religious practises and conversion therapy.

Former Number 10 equalities advisor Jayne Ozanne expressed relief that the government will include full protections for trans people.

‘It’s encouraging to hear that, after nearly five years, we are finally going to get the legislative ban that we have been promised,’ she said.
