Sunak to compromise on Northern Ireland Protocol to put Brexit deal to an END

Rishi Sunak may be considering a Brexit deal that will enrage some Brexit-supporting Conservative MPs as well as members of Northern Ireland’s Democratic Unionist Party (DUP).

According to the Telegraph, Rishi Sunak is looking into a compromise with the European Union as part of the Brexit negotiations. Foreign Secretary James Cleverly and European Commission Vice President Maros Sefcovic are leading negotiations between the UK government and the EU.

Officials in the United Kingdom will consider a system in which European judges can continue to render judgements and may have the final say on which EU laws apply to Ulster.

However, it has been reported that the UK government will seek to implement safeguards within a “overarching framework” to prevent the European Commission from taking disputes directly to court.

Any disagreements would instead be reviewed by an independent panel, which would seek advice from the European Court of Justice on regulatory issues.

According to the newspaper, UK officials are confident that a deal can be reached between the European Union and the government, and have begun planning how to inform Brexiteers within the Conservative Party and Democratic Unionist Party (DUP).

Members of the DUP and the European Research Group (ERG) are reportedly planning to oppose the new plan.

The DUP and some Tory MPs will both request that the EU courts have no say in any decision-making in Northern Ireland.
