Rishi Sunak’s government is “facing an exodus,” with two junior members already discussing whether to resign over his Brexit negotiations on Northern Ireland.
Brexiteer Tory MPs are furious over an apparent attempt to reach an agreement with the EU that would have placed Northern Ireland under Brussels control.
“They’re talking about it on the basis that their careers aren’t going anywhere anyway because the polls show we’re heading for a big defeat,” a Conservative MP said.
“Their feeling is that they may as well make a principled stand on this issue and some noise, which will at least show they are trying to do the right thing and may persuade Downing Street not to do something stupid.”
Already though there has been talk that Home Secretary Suella Braverman is ready to walk over a Brexit compromise.
Another Tory MP said: “If these two decide to go it could trigger a rush to the exit door and see many more resignations.”
