The EU is concerned that a “radical” new UK prime minister will sever ties between London and Brussels.
According to one EU diplomat, there is no indication that Tory leadership candidate Liz Truss will change her approach in negotiations over the Northern Ireland Protocol, which has strained relations.
“If the UK government follows through on the plan already laid out, I think it’s fair to say relations will deteriorate,” they told the Observer.
Another added that the ongoing leadership race was only serving to “radicalise the candidates,” making it even more difficult to reach an agreement when a new figure occupied Number 10.
