Brexit Warning as NEW Prime Minister Sunak FEARS ‘Upsetting’ EU

A fervent Brexiteer has expressed concern that new Prime Minister Rishi Sunak will fail to resolve the Northern Ireland Protocol “for fear of upsetting the European Union.”

When Liz Truss was Foreign Secretary earlier this year, she introduced the Northern Ireland Protocol Bill into the House of Commons, which, if passed, would allow the Government to make unilateral changes to how the Brexit mechanism is implemented.

The Bill has been passed by Parliament, but it may now face a series of challenges from peers as it moves through the House of Lords.

Mr Sunak backed Brexit in the referendum in June 2016, but many on the Conservative Party’s right still see him as too pro-EU.

Ben Habib, a devoted Brexiteer and former Brexit Party MEP, claimed Mr Sunak was “very opposed” to the Northern Ireland Protocol Bill and would not want to “ruffle the feathers of the EU.”

“I have it second hand that Rishi was very against the Northern Ireland Protocol Bill that Liz Truss brought forward to the Cabinet,” he said.

“Rishi is all about stability and is not going to want to ruffle the EU’s feathers.”

Mr. Habib is sceptical that the new Prime Minister will address any of the issues surrounding post-Brexit trade in Northern Ireland because Mr. Sunak does not want to upset the status quo.

“There will be no solution to the issues in Northern Ireland as long as Rishi Sunak is Prime Minister; he is more likely to return us to regular realignment with the EU than to deviate.”

“Brexit isn’t just about leaving the institution of the EU. It’s about setting a regulatory and legislative path for the UK that suits British interests. But Rishi won’t do that out of fear of upsetting the EU.”
